From what I've heard and read, Christmas is a big to-do in Uruguay. I was wondering if it's common for people to have Christmas trees in their homes here. If so, do most people have "real" Christmas trees or "fake" Christmas trees? In the US, it seems like there is a Christmas tree lot on every corner, but I haven't seen anything similar here (not that I would expect it to be the same ).
About that, from my experience I would have said before EVRYONE have a Christmas tree at home. A very recent survey indicated however that just 78% of Uruguayan homes have a tree decorated these days. Most of the times the people I know and myself have a plastic tree, but it is not uncommon to decorate the real trees in your garden as well, when you have them. Tradition says the tree should be decorated on Dec. 8th, and the one you have should be kept for 7 years before changing it. I have no idea where this came from, but since I remember my family has followed these rules. Just because… that’s tradition
Are you celebrating Christmas here?
Hope you are doing well and feel already at home here.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! It's really great to know the background behind the Christmas traditions in Uruguay. December 8 - that's tomorrow! I guess I should look into whether we're going to get a tree this year.
My family back in the States has always been very big into celebrating Christmas. However, we will be celebrating Christmas in Uruguay this year. I'm too far along in my pregnancy to consider flying back to the States and we're really looking forward to enjoying our first Uruguayan summer.
