I am a certified teacher USA w/ my masters in Education...I am in the process of relocating to Uruguay (I am a US citizen) and I want to know what are the job opportunities in education? I am a native / fluent English speaker and I am intermediate level Spanish speaker
thank you SOOOO much for your quick response to my question! I really appreciate it & really look forward to making a life for myself & son in Uruguay...your response is a huge in me meeting my goals!
Those are private schools so they may pay a bit more, but you should know that in general a teachers wage here is VERY low. I was talking to a Uruguayan friend yesterday who told me that university professors get paid something like 400pesos for a giving one or two classes a week (thats barely $20!). You need to consider that before making your plans. You could maybe also give private English lessons, in fact I think in general this might be more profitable than school teaching.

Im afraid what your friend told you is not fully correct.
For your guidance, the salary for an assistance professor for teaching - 03 hours per MONTH is $ 1023 (USD 50) 40 hours per MONTH is $ 15568 (USD 773) 120 hours per MONTH is $ 24909 (USD 2445)
For a senior professor, the wage is - 03 hours per MONTH is $ 1917 (USD 90) 40 hours per MONTH is $ 36717 (USD 1835) 120 hours per MONTH is $ 58747 (USD 2900)
In addition, other benefits apply (extra bonus if married, if raising children, for senior teachers, etc, etc)
Here is the full information regarding professors wage at the UDELAR (Universidad de la Republica). http://www.universidad.edu.uy/dgp/concurso/es09.pdf
Regarding primary school teachers and high school teachers, minimum wage is around USD 500.- + benefits (public system) for 120 hours per month. Private system has better wages which improve depending on being a junior or senior teacher.

You have been so helpful! Uruguay is a small country & I hope to be able to take you out for a drink or a coffee when I arrive in January! Thank you so much for your ongoing responses & taking to the time to help me! You have really put me at ease!
Iggy, I am glad to see wages have increased from the time I was teaching in the UdelaR. However, even though this makes little difference, the table indicates hours per week.
With this said, I must add however education is overall a very good deal, and Marcy I am sure your skills and experience will be more than welcome in Uruguay.
