Wilderness Canoeing (or Kayaking) in Uruguay
Permalink

I understand that there are rivers in certain parts of UY that have a tradition of canoeing and kayaking, particularly on the Rio Olimar.

Does anyone have insight into this?

Is there any whitewater/rapids? Is there any tradition of multi-night wilderness canoe trips? I have background as a canoeing guide and would love to explore some lakes and rivers. Anyone ever heard of anyone doing something like that in Uruguay? Any "wilderness outfitters" (that don't specialize in shooting things!)?

I prefer open-boat Canoeing, but am aware that kayaking might have to suffice.

Thanks.

My buddy is actually in the process of starting up a wilderness/ adventure/ kayaking company...  I haven't chatted with him in a couple of weeks, but he was talking about doing multi-night trips and such.

Other than him, I haven't heard of anyone else.  But for all I know there could be 20 outfitters doing it...

I'll see where he is about getting everything up and running and place his contact info on the board whenever he's ready to be contacted...

I chatted with my buddy, he's still getting his website set up, but he's ready to go.  You can contact George Winter, through his email here. Just let him know that you got his email from Brian's forum.

Hi....this is being addictive. I better start doing something else...but in the meanwhile, I know there is one, very interesting, on the Cuareim river. It is a 4-5 days "tour" in the wild, canoeing, not sure where they start but it ends in Artigas, in the north. I was there couple years ago, and I am afraid I did not keep the numbers, but Artigas is not that big, je je, I am sure you can get the information just calling anyone there :) I would start in the tourist office though.
