How can I marry a Uruguayan citizen in Montivideo...I am from the USA
Permalink

Please send info on the marriage process in Montivideo, Uruguay?
I met my fiance' online and now want to travel to Uruguay, marry him and we both plan to return to live in the USA.

I've found almost no info online and my fiance' has found it requires so much time and money to accomplish a marriage in Uruguay. Any suggestions and experience?

Thanks! inga

Is there a reason you want to get married in Uruguay if you aren't planning to live here?

Not sure why you're asking...?

It's ok, ezmeralda, I don't mind answering Crystal's question.
My fiance's parents are elderly and cannot make the trip to the US, so we decided to marry in UY. We want them present when we exchange our vows.

Any info you can provide re: the steps for getting married in UY will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! inga

ezmeralda... Although I didn't ask Chrystal why she asked that question... I already know the reason why... It's because it's very easy and very inexpensive to get married in the U.S. (ie you can get married in Vegas for U$S 100)

If it was me... I would have an ceremony and exchange of vows in Uruguay, then have an informal ceremony and get married in the U.S.

The reason for doing this is the U.S. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) won't be as likely to question the validity of the marriage.

Inga... I think the best thing for you to do is to consult a local immigration attorney to figure out the best route...

I think that's sound advice Inga, not just because it's so cheap (what a romantic!). You will face many obstacles trying to naturalize your Uruguayan husband with a Uruguayan marriage certificate. If you can satisfy the family with a nice ceremony here and justice of the peace marriage back in the states might do nicely. That's what we did. My wife is Uruguayan. Your next step would be a change of status and apply for a green card. I know, they aren't green anymore. Remember, keep his travel permission up to date while you are waiting. Any missteps may get you rejected in today's atmosphere. Good Luck.

JDC... One thing I've never been accused of is being romantic ;)
