Hi everyone,

I'm from the caribbean and I've been contemplating this for for some time now.
However i dont see or hear much about schools and jobs. i have three children, (16) (10) and (2) years, I'm a secretary and my husband work at one of the country's prominent hardware. would there be jobs in uruguay for people like us and what about bilingual school for the kids. what would be the salary range of a
secretary and what type of qualification would be accepted.

thanks much

Hello Jaybay,

I am glad to see you are interested in Uruguay. Jobs are available, specially for qualified persons. Now, a few considerations: 1) For almost every job you must be fluent in Spanish. 2) For a receptionist is expected to be bilingual, or even better multilingual. 3) Salaries vary a lot, depending on languages, company, specific task, etc. I have heard any number between USD 300 to USD 1500, net per month. I would say the average is around 400 - 600 USD net per month. I don't know about your husband, that would depend on his specific skills and background, but again, knowledge of Spanish is absolutely important.
You can explore some jobs online, but most likely you will have to be physically here to actually apply to one of them. On the phone/web hiring is VERY rare.

A list of sites just to explore jobs:

http://empleos.execuzone.com/index.php/pais/7/Uruguay (Spanish)
http://uy.buscojobs.com/ (Spanish)
http://www.dca.com.uy/en/home.html (english/Spanish)

There are bilingual schools, but (there is always a but in life, right?) they are expensive for someone living on uruguayan salaries. I, for example, can afford one child, but it would be impossible for me to have 3 children there. Although the fact they are bilingual, spanish is still a key skill to success, so you would need to think in some Spanish immersion course before getting the older kids into a school. The 2 years old will probably speak spanish mush faster than you :)

This is really a brief note, but keep reading these sites and you will find more information. Do not hesitate to ask any particular question.

Best wishes!

Esteban

You are very welcome! Hope you have a great time these holidays and please feel free to ask any question or anything you need. I can not say about employers, but people will certainly welcome you and your family here.

Feliz Navidad! / Feliz Natal! / Merry Christmas!
