Arriving January 2010

Hey there Johnsons.  I've been meaning to get in touch for a few weeks since I found your site.  I'm moving to Mvd in January with my Uruguayan girlfriend who's gonna be studying at University.

From reading your posts, I know we have lots in common and I look forward to catching some live music with you guys. (and the fact you've apparently come to the conclusion on your blog that Canadians are cool doesn't hurt either!).

One observation I'd like to point out is that there is definitely a lack of info online/out there about being "young" (under say 40? - I'm 33/gf is 25) in Uruguay.  I think you guys have a nice chance to become the main stop for that sort of info.

Anyway, looking forward to these forums and to meeting in a few months.

Mike

Here's a post by a young Irish expat (younger than your gf!) about meeting young people in Uruguay:

Hey Mike...

Thanks for following us...  There is a ton to do here for people our ages...  There's live music, pool halls, great place to eat, futbol games, beaches, bars, museums and of course just chilling out and enjoying life...

I agree with the lack of online info... Hopefully people our age will contribute to this forum and of course we'll always be giving real life experiences through our blog.

Hi all!! My name is Soledad...I was born and raised here in Montevideo...I lived in the US for a while, on and off about 3 years, but have been back home for about 5 years now! WOWW time flies!!! :)

I have always loved LOVED English, as a matter of fact I'm a teacher of English as a foreign language, I do in-company training, business English mainly, and I'm starting to get into the world of Conference Interpreting, which is what I really love doing.....I'm also studying International Relations at Universidad de la Republica, I still have 2 more years to go to get my BA, I dropped out and finally decided to come back after many years (I'm 29)!

I have always been very fond of the US, I like the people and culture, every time I travel, everyone's so friendly to me, and helpful, I'd like to be as welcoming to people coming to Uruguay as people were to me.

Do you guys have any regular meetings?

Happy Halloween!!!

saludos!!!!

Hi Mike,
I know what you mean about lack of information on the internet, believe it or not things have improved in the past year. When I was searching a year and a half ago there was almost nothing! Now there are a few more blogs and forums and its improving all the time. I have a blog too (although very sporadic), I try to show what great little gems can be found around Montevideo, you might garner some hope from it ;) http://montevideoliving.blogspot.com  There are plenty of things for younger people, however here in Uruguay people have less disposable income and entrepreneurial activites are less rampant so there are fewer cool bars and chic little cafes....but they do exist, you just have to search a little harder.

Hi Soledad! I saw some of your messages on the Total Uruguay site. You should come to the Sunday Expat Lunches, there's plenty of Americans and other expats there to keep you entertained :) They happen every Sunday starting at 1pm in Fellini's restaurant in Pocitos. There's more info here: http://www.totaluruguay.com/montevideo/expats.html

Hi Soledad,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting! Maybe we'll see you at a Sunday meeting sometime. We only make it to the meeting maybe once a month, so if you're interested in getting together for lunch or something, send me a private message.

Chrystal
